Niraamaya Retreats – Surya Samudra

This resort proudly won the award “Indias Best Wellness Spa 2015”.

After 40-minute drive from the airport in a southwesterly direction you will reach the Niraamaya Retreats – Surya Samudra. The World Class Boutique Heritage Retreat is located on a cliff just south of the resort of Kovalam between Chowara and Vizhinjam. Decorations, furniture and paintings in the exterior and interior, chosen with love and extraordinary sense of taste bring the romantic history of ancient Kerala here alive. Each piece was carefully selected and can tell his own story.

The 22 cottages are original antique Kerala wood houses, removed from their original location and lovingly restored and built up again. The roofs are mainly made of terracotta. The tiled floors and wooden columns are a feast for the senses. The facility is built spaciously and offer guests plenty of room for privacy. Some of the cottages are standing proud on the cliff and offer a fascinating view of the Arabian Sea. The two small beaches can be reached via a small steps.

The 19 Rock Garden Classic rooms, situated in the upper part of the resort, are ancient wooden houses with thick wooden doors. The view from the window overlooks the garden with palm trees, papaya trees and banana trees. Next to the entrance there is a covered sitting area. The air-conditioned rooms feature a king-size four poster bed, LCD TV, desk, a small lounge and an open-air bathroom.

The 10 Heritage Premium Cottages are near the sea and have a separate living room, a lounge area and an open-air bathroom with a bathtub and lush greenery. The Octagon Cottages are equipped with air conditioning, king-size 4-poster bed, work desk, LCD TV, sitting area with a Planter`s Chair; the open-to-sky bathroom set in a small garden. The BanyanTree bungalows are equipped with an additional home-theatre and iPod Dock station. The Heritage Premium Cottages have a separate living room and lounge area. The Heritage Superior Cottages offer sea views. The most special feature of the Heritage Classic Cottages are the open-air bathroom. The Rock Garden Classic Rooms are closed off with a lounge area and en-suite bathroom.

The Oottupura Restaurant, perfectly built on the cliff, offers a varied cuisine with delicacies from around the world to local Kerala specialties. The porch seems like a gallery, in addition to the culinary specialties guests can enjoy a wide, stunning view over the Arabian Sea. The Channel-Restaurant serves barbecue and delicious seafood specialties. To end off the perfect day enjoy a glas of beer or wine at the Mandira Bar. The view from the cliff down to the long, sandy beach, waves gently moving in and out, is the most beautiful view of Kovalam. Tastefully decorated, with a stone wall the infinity pool gives the impression that the water flows directly into the sea. Other facilities: travel desk, internet services, library, curio shop, laundry service and currency exchange. Major credit cards are accepted.

A highlight in Surya Samudra is the Niraamaya Spa Center. Already the reception welcomes you like the entrance into a temple and the sound of the bubbling fountain provides soothing relaxation. The theme of the resort: all mankind should enjoy good health an old wisdom from Sanskrit. At the Ayurvedic center of Surya Samudra the guests enjoy traditional Ayurvedic treatments according to the old science of long life, based on the ancient Indian healing system. The Ayurvedic center is awarded by the Ministry of Tourism of Kerala with the Green Leaf certificate, a rating higher than the Olive Leaf Certificate. Surya Samudra thus fulfils the additional requirements, that all employees in the Ayurveda area obtained a special tourism certificate, that there are separate areas for yoga and meditation and that the resort is  of a high architectural standard with a green environment giving a peaceful atmosphere. After the initial examination by the Ayurvedic physician, the patient receives a treatment- and diet-plan.

We recommend the following during your treatment program:

• drink water as much as possible (2-3 litre per day)
• avoid all cold meals and drinks (meals and drinks should be consumed at room temperature)
• very important after treatments: rest at least 2-3 hours, stay in shady areas, avoid swimming or rain and cold drinks
• smoking and alcoholic or fizzy drinks are not allowed during treatments
• avoid to sleep during day time and in the evening do not go to late to bed

Trivandrum airport offers very good domestic and international flight connections. The airport is 40 min drive from the resort.

Heritage Classic Cottage (A/C = air-condition)
The Heritage Classic Cottages are situated at the upper section of the resort have brick covered roofs and open-air-bathroom and living room.

Heritage Superior Cottages (A/C = air-condition)
The Heritage Superior Cottages have open-air-bathroom and  overlooking the sea.

Heritage Premium Cottage (A/C = air-condition)
Also called ‘Cinnamon House’ is a free standing unit with 2 separate bedrooms, living rooms and open air-bathroom, situated on the edge of the resort overlooking the sea.

Banyon Tree Cottage (A/C = air-condition)
The Banyon Tree Cottage, build from stone at the upper section of the resort equipped with home-theatre and iPod docking-station. This is the only house with a Banyan-Tree in the open-air-bath-garden.

Octagon House (A/C = air-condition)
The Octagon House situated close to the beach with open-air-bathroom and overlooking the sea.
